Description
Batak Ulos Ragidup Ceremonial Textile, Sumatra, 19th C. Toba Batak people. Cotton, constructed from five components (two side panels joined to a larger central section consisting of a large panel in the middle and two end panels adorned with complex geometric designs executed in supplementary weft. Such textiles were traditionally given to the mother of the bridegroom from the father of the bride at his daughter's wedding. The ceremonial exchange was meant to ensure the fertility of the couple and solidify the union of the families. They were occasionally used during funerary ceremonies. Size: 71'' x 41'', 180 x 104 cm.
