Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Panama, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A fine pair of pottery vessels: a globular jar and a tripod dish. Boasting a vibrant hue of orange, the jar presents a round yet stable base and impressively thin walls that rise to a bulbous body, a curved shoulder, a brief, tubular neck, and an annular rim. A pair of lug handles flank the neck, spaced equidistantly on the shoulder edge. On the other hand, the tripod vessel displays a hemispherical body a slightly corseted neck, and a dramatically flared rim, all sitting upon 3 hollow, tapered legs that curve outwards at the bottom. A pair of twisted handles connect the edge of the rim to the body of the vessel. The vertical slit on each leg previously allowed them to produce a lovely rattling noise created by petite clay clappers that were contained within them. Size: 8.1" W x 6.8" H (20.6 cm x 17.3 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Condition
Jar has small area of loss on rim and a stable hairline fissure that travels from rim to base, as well as some loss to handles. Tripod vessel has losses to rim and clappers. Both have expected surface wear with nicks and abrasions. Otherwise, both are very nice with heavy earthen deposits throughout.
