Description
East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A lovely group of 3 hand-built pottery bowls from Ming-era China, each decorated in the classic blue-on-white style. The first bowl features a pair of concentric rings within the basin and 2 rows of abstract pseudo-calligraphy on the exterior. The second bowl features thick walls and a shell motif within the basin, and along the exterior is a dense band of leaves beneath a register of clouds and linear motifs. The largest bowl exhibits a larger shell in the basin, a flared rim lined with concentric stripes, and 5 abstract butterflies hovering above a lower band of leaves along the exterior walls. Size of largest (butterfly motif): 5.8" W x 2.3" H (14.7 cm x 5.8 cm)

Condition
Each vessel has small chips to feet, light encrustations, and minor pitting to glaze commensurate with age, with a couple of stable hairline fissures to 1 bowl, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to blue pigment and decorative motifs. Old inventory label adhesive along exterior of bowl with pseudo-calligraphy.
