Description
second half 19th century, 114 x 53 cm, South East Caucasus, Moghan-Savalan
FRAUENKNECHT, BERTRAM, Schahsavan Sumakh Taschen. Fürth 1993, ill. 16
This sumakh khorjin was woven by a Shahsavan nomad tribal group living in the Moghan-Savalan region. It is one of the examples with the "arrow gül" design, a name derived from the red primary motif with a gül centre and four arms ending in arrowheads. Frauenknecht has published a comparative example with a similar border. – The two halves of the double bag are very well preserved and retain their original kilim backs, but they were separated at some point in time. The striped kilim connecting panel now present is not the original condition.
