Description
A rare and interesting wooden mask from the Bamileke peoples, Cameroon, Africa. Carved wood, painted. Considered one of the most dangerous and ferocious of all Bamileke masks, The Nkoh mask is only danced on occasion of important festivities. During the performance the mask was fixed by ropes and sprinkled with water in order to calm its aggressiveness. "Kungan" is a kind of religious society, led by nine priests, responsible for healing and truth telling. The mask measures 11.5 x 7.5 inches ( 15 inches tall on professional custom display stand.) provenance: The Robert Banks collection, Maryland.
