Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE; Western Europe, probably England or France, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. An attractive ring of minimalist style with a Neoclassical gold ring body bearing a shank with terminals that bifurcate just beneath the bezel. Within the ovoid bezel is a Roman carnelian intaglio that boasts warm vermilion and coral hues as well as a smooth, beveled edge. Incised on the intaglio is a right-facing figure of Mars (Greek Ares) who sits nude in a chair, wears a tilted helmet, and obverses a miniature figure of either the goddess Victoria (Greek Nike) or a winged victory that rests on his outstretched right arm, perhaps as an allegory meant to represent victory in war. Size (ring): 0.81" W x 0.95" H (2.1 cm x 2.4 cm); (shank): 0.81" Diameter (2.1 cm); (bezel): 0.4" W x 0.52" H (1 cm x 1.3 cm); (intaglio): 0.36" W x 0.47" H (0.9 cm x 1.2 cm); metal quality: 46% copper, 37.68% gold, 12% silver; weight: 2.4 grams; US ring size: 8.75

Condition
Wearable as shown and constructed during the stated period. Carnelian intaglio is ancient; gold ring setting is Neoclassical. Expected abrasions and softening to intaglio details commensurate with age, with very light abrasions to bezel and shank, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to intaglio. Shank is stamped with "9 Ct." on interior surface.
