Description
**Originally Listed At $1800**
Roman Empire, intaglio dates to ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE, modern setting. A breathtaking 18K gold ring featuring an oval jasper intaglio depicting a warrior figure, possibly Mars which would be quite apropos given the red color, standing in composite profile, holding a spear or standard in his right hand and presenting a flower/plant in his left hand. The jasper intaglio of stunning vermilion hues is set in an 18K solid gold bezel with a beautiful rope-pattern surround and shank. Size: intaglio measures .625" L x .5" W (1.6 cm x 1.3 cm) Ring size: 5.5
Intaglios are engraved stones that may have been used as seals in ancient times. This intaglio may depict Mars, the god of war who represented military might as a means toward peace. Interestingly, Mars was also revered as an agricultural guardian. This is particularly pertinent to the imagery of this intaglio as the figure is presenting what appears to be a plant or crop. Festivals honoring him were usually in March, the month named for him; however, they also occurred in October, the month which marked the ending of the farming season.
Provenance: private Vero Beach, Florida, USA collection, acquired before 2003; ex-old English collection, before 2000
