Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An elegant ring, entirely hand-carved from stone to feature a convex band and flat ovoid intaglio of a quadruped resembling a horse. Roman finger rings sculpted from a single piece of stone are comparatively rare. The hoops can be plain, as seen on the example presented here, or ornamented, and are typically made from carnelian, chalcedony, rock crystal, and amber. The type typically has the bezel engraved in intaglio for use as a seal, as seen in the incised form of a quadruped on the ovoid bezel of this ring. A rare and remarkable example from ancient Rome!
