South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fine cup formed from a hollowed-out coconut shell with a thick rim and a deep basin. The coconut base is formed from a fragment of a second coconut which is adhered to the base of the vessel body. The front of the cup displays the seal of Hawaii which bears the phrase "Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono," which translates as, "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness." Size: 4" W x 2.4" H (10.2 cm x 6.1 cm)
