Description
Original 1857 legal document concerning a case against a Florida slaveholder. Written during “Fall Term 1857” from Jackson County, Florida, the document enters judgement against the slaveholder, and orders him to forfeit his slaves for failure to make certain bond payments. The document then lists the names of the 10 slaves he will forfeit (who will then be auctioned to settle his debts). The document itself is pre-printed and filled in in ink on blue rag wove paper. Of note is the large and ornate eagle watermark. There are multiple docketing notes as well, indicating the various twists and turns of the case. The document is in very fine condition. Florida slave-related material is uncommon.
