Description
Carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph of Robert Augustus Toombs, a career politician and first Secretary of State to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The unmarked verso bears an inscription: “Robert Toombs, Washington GA, Secretary of State with Jeff Davis.” Toombs was a firm believer in state’s rights and was a longtime friend of fellow Georgian, Alexander H. Stephens. After a falling out with Jefferson Davis over the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter, Toombs quit his position to join the army, becoming a Brigadier General. He was wounded at the Battle of Antietam in 1862. Toombs resigned his commission not long after and attempted to gain a position within the Georgia Militia, but was denied. He fled to Cuba after the Confederacy’s defeat in 1865, but later returned, dying in 1885.
