Item Details
Description
Carte-de-visite (CDV) of Andersonville survivor Peter Kiene of the 16th Iowa. Kiene enlisted at the age of 16, was wounded at least once, and taken prisoner twice. Though young and small for his age, Kiene's boldness during the war is legendary. He reportedly threatened to take the "16" regimental number off his hat after deciding other men in his unit acted cowardly at the Battle of Shiloh.

Another interesting aspect of Kiene's service is that period accounts indicate he managed to survive the awful conditions at Andersonville Prison through the assistance of a local woman, whose brother was a Confederate soldier held captive by Union forces. Kiene's father somehow became aware of this, and established an agreement where he would take care of the woman's brother, if she would look after his son. The plan worked, and both soldiers survived.

Verso bears a Dubuque, Iowa photographer's imprint. Interested bidders are encouraged to read more about Kiene online.
