Item Details
Description
Original, hand-written account authored by an unnamed correspondent from the Chicago Times newspaper regarding mines, torpedoes, and other covert weapons utilized by the Confederate army. Many other papers picked up a copy of this report after its publication in the Times and reported it in their own newspapers, including the New York Evening Post which had the following introduction to the report:
“The rebels are certainly ingenious. They devise queer things in a queer way, and when they run away leave mines and dangerous pitfalls to catch our troops. Luckily, however, these contrivances are discovered in time to prevent mischief. The torpedoes are pulled up, and the mines saved from explosion. The last discovery was made at Columbus, Kentucky, when our troops took possession of the place, and it is thus described by a correspondent of the Chicago Times.”
The quotation of the correspondent’s report printed in the New York Evening Post matches exactly what this handwritten report states except for the very last sentence of the report. Instead of printing the paragraph describing torpedoes, the correspondent apparently substituted the following sentence to conclude his report; “Fortunately, their fiendish designs were discovered in time, and no damage has been done by soldiers, who are constantly on the lookout for discoveries, and might by accident have sent off the train.”
The identity of the Chicago Times Correspondent is not stated in the report but could probably be discovered with further investigation.
This rare and original correspondent’s report is in excellent condition.
