Description
Stereoview photograph of General Meade’s headquarters following the battle of Gettysburg. Author and Gettysburg expert William Frassanito identifies this particular view as having been taken by Alexander Gardner on July 6th, 1863. General Meade's headquarters were located in Lydia Leister's home on Taneytown Road, situated just south of Cemetery Hill. Leister, a widow, evacuated Gettysburg with her four children on July 1st.
Although it was situated downhill from the central Federal position on July 3rd, Meade's headquarters nonetheless suffered heavy damage during the Confederate’s two-hour artillery barrage prior to Pickett’s Charge. Verso bears a lengthy description. Published as part of the Photographic History, 1861-1865, by "The War Photograph and Exhibition Company" of Hartford, Connecticut.
