Description
1835 1ed Native American INDIAN Sketches Pawnee KANSAS Hunting Irving RARE
Better known for being the brother of Washington Irving, John Treat Irving was a fine, 19th-century Americana author. Perhaps his best work was his 1835 Indian Sketches. This book describes a tenure spent with the Pawnee and Sac Indians near the Kansas River – highlighting their hunting techniques, customs, and lifestyles. However, it also contains notes on the ruthless treatment of Indians including the exile from their homes and land.
Larned says of this work:
“The object of this expedition was of a higher humanitarian order than those which the government has usually organized for Indian affairs. Irving accompanied the expedition, and his work affords us many interesting incidents of savage life. The work abounds in such fragments of the traditions, history and peculiarities of the Indian tribes as well as the opportunity offered the author.”
