â€œSeven and Nine Years Among the Camanches and Apaches” by Edwin Eastman is a fictional 19th-century autobiography created by publisher Clark Johnson. The story narrates the alleged journey of Eastmans family from Massachusetts to California and their subsequent capture and life among the Comanche and Apache Native American tribes. However, the true purpose of the book is to promote a â€œsnake oil” product called â€œIndian Blood Syrup,” claiming it has extraordinary medicinal properties that were discovered during their captivity. Johnsons advertisement at the end of the book describes the remedy as a cure-all for various ailments and invites readers to become agents for selling the product. The entire book served as an elaborate marketing ploy for â€œDr. Clark Johnsons Indian Blood Syrup.”
