George Catlin was an American traveler and artist known for his perspective and understanding of Native Americans and the American West. He wrote essays on the life and culture of Plains Indians such as Sioux and Iowa tribes. One of his landmark works was Illustrations of the North American Indians. This 1850 edition, a collection of letters, anecdotes, and stories of his time spent with Indians, was published to memorialize the tribes with which he had grown so close.
