Description
1856 1ed Explorations of John C Fremont Native American Indians California West
“My purpose was to get leave to bring my party into the settlements in order to outfit and to obtain the supplies that had now become necessary.”
-John C. Fremont
John Charles Frémont or Fremont was an American explorer, politician, and soldier who, in 1856, became the first candidate of the Republican Party for the office of President of the United States. This account of exploration includes Fremont’s expeditions took him to California, along the Oregon Trail, and through Nevada, where he encountered and battled Native American Indians.
This first edition, first printing of “Life of Col. John C. Fremont” was published the year Fremont ran for President. It features 8 full-page engraved plates throughout! A truly iconic piece of Americana literature. According to Sabin,
“Mr. Smucker’s memoir of Col. Fremont forms p. 5-72. The rest of the book is a reprint of Col. Fremont’s official ‘A Report on an Exploration of the Country lying between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains,’ 1843, Senate ed.”
According to Kurutz, ‘Report’ is “one of the monumental works of western exploration!”
