Description
1846 1ed Mississippi Exploration Monette Indian Wars Color MAP Western Americana

John Monette’s ‘History of the discovery and settlement of the valley of the Mississippi’ is the history of the Americas along and around the Mississippi River. It is told primarily from the perspective of the Indian Wars between Native Americans and France, Spain, and Great Britain.

“The first volume is principally occupied with a relation of the French and Spanish discovery of the territory, and the association of the colonial governments of these nations with the Indians, and their wars with the various tribes inhabiting it. Much of the larger portion of Vol. II. is devoted to a narration of the Indian wars of the States bordering the Ohio. The work is probably the best of the numerous class of books on the subject of western history.” (Field).

This incredibly rare and valuable 1846 first edition includes some of the following topics:

First Spanish discoveries in Florida 1512 to 1538 –

Exploration of the Mississippi River by La Salle: his colony on the Colorado 1673 to 1696

Advance of French settlements from Canada on the Upper Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to the close of the French war 1696 to 1764

Louisiana under the Western Company after the Natchez massacre: extermination of the Natchez tribes 1729 to 1733

Expulsion of the French from the Ohio region: Indian hostilities until the close of Pontiac’s war 1757 to 1764 –

Lord Dunmore's Indian War: 1774 to 1776 –

Indian warfare, and its effects upon the frontier people: eminent pioneers of Kentucky 1775 to 1794 –

Early settlement and Indian hostilities in the southwestern territory until its admission into the federal union as the state of Tennessee 1776 to 1796 –

The territory of Orleans from its first organization until after its admission into the Union as the state of Louisiana 1804 to 1815 –

Extension of the federal union west of the Mississippi and the re-annexation of Texas 1803 to 1846.
