Description
THE CHURCH OF SAN BLAS PULPIT. Height 36 in., Width 16 in., Depth 9 in.
Made by Antonio Olave, (b.1928) a renowned artisan working in Cusco. The offered exquisitely detailed model of the 1560 altar pulpit in the Spanish Colonial Church of San Blas, Cusco, Peru. (Cond: damaged in an earthquake, rebuilt in 1650). The domed canopy, also called a sounding board, is elaborately carved with scrolls and a graduated circular pendant, the upper part with representations of saints and a central figure of Christ, the back support carved with a figure of a bishop beneath an arched cornice, the gallery fitted with spiral columns, on scrolled bracket supports, with figures of the twelve apostles set all-around.Provenance: Private Palm Beach CollectionPurchased in Cusco directly from Olave by the present
