Description
(1831 - 1881) Twentieth President of the United States, Union army major general, assassinated while in office. Rare Civil War date A.L.S. 'J. A. Garfield', 2pp. 8vo., Hamilton, Ohio, Sep. 13, 1864 to Republican H. Y. Beebe in Ravenna. In part: '...I am helping Gen. [Robert C.] Schenck in his District and he goes to northern Ohio this week. I am sorry I have an appointment...Schenck is a glorious fellow and I hope he will have a good hearing. He speaks in Cleveland on the 15th...I wish you would send him an invitation to stop with you...I know the General is weary - and a good deal worn out...he would appreciate the hospitalities of your pleasant home...I hope you will not consider me impertinent...I have said nothing to the General...' Very good.
