Description
1917 Childrens Literature Caldecott Picture Books Nursery Rhymes 11 Book Lot
A delightful 11-book lot of childrens literature, illustrated by Randolph Caldecott! Caldecott (1846–1886) was a prolific British artist and illustrator, whose work greatly influenced the look of childrens book illustrations in the 19th century. His work is still highly regarded today; as modern illustrator Maurice Sendak, author of Where the Wild Things Are, has said:
"Caldecotts work heralds the beginning of the modern picture book. He devised an ingenious juxtaposition of picture and word, a counterpoint that never happened before. Words are left out—but the picture says it. Pictures are left out—but the word says it…. You cant say its a tragedy, but something hurts. Like a shadow passing quickly over. It is this which gives a Caldecott book—however frothy the verses and pictures—its unexpected depth."
The Caldecott Medal—an annual award recognizing the preceding years most distinguished American picture book for children—was named in his honor.
