Celebes (Suluwesi) Island sacred ritual cloth, painted in brown, the central corral formed by buffalo heads and surrounded by boys and buffalo, the animal most associated with prosperity among the Toraja people. With fields of crosses and key fret border. Approx. 66" x 16". Acquired in the 1970s by the original owner, who purchased a number of antique Indonesian textiles from Anita E. Spertus and Robert J. Holmgren, authors of "Early Indonesian Textiles from Three Island Cultures", published 1989 in conjunction with the exhibit "Early Indonesian Textiles from Three Island Cultures" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC.Provenance: Estate of Cayce Odom of Charlottesville, VA.
