Indonesia, Bali, ca. 1850 to 1900 CE. A large scale star calendar painting (Palelintangan) known as a 'tabing plintangan', delineated in ink and paint on a natural cotton cloth that was likely dipped in rice paste as is the tradition. The composition is gridded into 49 images arranged in 7 vertical columns with deities, wayang figures, animals, and demonic figures (buta) particular to each day. Interestingly, the Balinese calendar merges its indigenous weekly cycles known as wuki with the Indian lunar (saka) calendar. The tumpek, known as palelintangan (after lintang - the constellations) is the most often created calendar and includes various combinations of 5 and 7 day weeks. Painted calendar has not been examined outside the frame. Appears to show some fading and minor stains. Frame shows some wear with scuffs and stains, but is intact as is the glass. Gallery paper on verso has some tears, but this does not impact the presentation of the composition. Wired for suspension.
