Vintage Japanese Tanto / Dagger with Red and Black Lacquer Sheath. Measures 15 1/4" in sheath.PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Collection. A tanto is one of the traditionally made Japanese swords / knives that were worn by the samurai class of feudal Japan. The tanto dates to the Heian period, when it was mainly used as a weapon but evolved in design over the years to become more ornate. Tanto were used in traditional martial arts (tantojutsu). These knives were also used for Seppuku, a form of Japanese ritual suicide by disembowelment. Seppuku was originally reserved only for samurai
