A Pair of (Ekko) Earrings with Makura Face
Western Tibet, circa 19th to early 20th century
Turquoise, Coral, and Gilt Copper
16.5 cm x 6 cm
Tibetan women wore this type of Ear ornament with the end in the form of stylized lotus buds, called Ekko. They hung at either side of the face hiding both ears and facing forward to show their considerable weight. They were attached with small hooks to a headdress or hung over the head during the special ceremonial New Year or other occasions.
