Description
Central Asia, Tibet, early 20th century CE. A red-lacquered and gilded skull cap or skull cup, known as a kapala, and used as a ritual bowl in Hindu Tantra and Buddhist Tantra. The bowl is made to hold offerings, often to wrathful deities, made from remains given a sky burial. Part of the belief in the transitory nature of human life for these religions involves the use of ritual implements made from human bones. Size: 3.75" W (9.5 cm)
