Luftwaffe Fallschirmjäger Named POW Grouping
Item Details
Description
Named POW 6th Fallschirmjäger Grouping consisting of a Luftwaffe visor, a sidecap, NSDAP flag, copies of photos. First is a German flag 28x22 inches. It has some staining and tears. It has been sun bleached a bit on one side. Does have the GIs name, Major Walter Crandall. He was a postal officer at one time in Naples, Italy. Next is a Luftwaffe side cap. The liner has some tears. This is the same side cap in his photo that the German soldier is wearing. Third item is the enlisted Luftwaffe visor cap. This one has seen better days but still mostly intact. The visor bill was replaced by the GI sometime shortly after the war. Last are the photos of the German veteran of his time at Camp Crowder in Missouri. This German veteran is Karl-Heinz Richter, a paratrooper in the 6th FJ regiment stationed in Normandy. Karl was there when the invasion took place and responded like many of his brother in arms did. He was wounded and sent to a field hospital where he was captured by Canadians on August 19, 1944. He was sent to England and then transferred to the US where he was stationed at Camp Crowder POW camp in Neosho, Missouri. Karl worked in the motor pool and was treated nicely in his words. After the war he stayed temporarily in Neosho, Missouri where he met Major Crandall who also lived down the road from Camp Crowder. They became friends and in the 50's Karl returned to Germany for his family. The two men realized they both served in Naples, Italy, of course during different times. Karl became a Berlin police officer and retired as a chief of police in Berlin. He visited his friend many times with fond memories after returning to Germany. Karl wanted to keep the original photos for memories so the photos included in this lot are copies.
