Item Details
Description
Roman, late Imperial to early Byzantine Period, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A beautiful sculpture of a woman, likely the Roman goddess Venus, meticulously hand-carved from the bone of an ungulate. Boasting an hourglass form, the slender female stands nude in a pose reminiscent of the Venus Pudica; her left hand holding a large jar across her chest, while her right rests just above her sex, grasping a piece of cloth that cascades down her lower body in billowing folds, referencing the liquid in the very vessel she carries. Her wavy coiffure is tied back in a loose bun with a few stray strands meandering down her sloped shoulders and framing her sweet visage comprised of elongated eyes beneath an arched brow, a naturalistic nose, plump lips, and full cheeks. Vessels and water were frequently associated with Venus - the goddess of love and sex - as they were traditional symbols of fertility. Size: 0.8" W x 3.8" H (2 cm x 9.7 cm); 4.6" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private C. Davis collection, Cyprus, Texas, USA, acquired at auction or gallery before 2011
