Description
A very finely carved wooden ladle or spoon with incised linear designs and geometric form. The Dan peoples carve such spoons as yearly "trophies" known as Wunkirmian. This spoon and others like it were brought out during important feasts and ceremonies and awarded to the women in the village considered to be the most generous and hospitable in the village. Dan peoples, Ivory Coast, Libera, West Africa. The spoon measures 17.25 inches ( 18 inches tall on base) Field collected in situ in the 1950's by Rev. Adkins of Adams county, Ohio.
