Description
Douglas MacArthur Advises a Colonel On His Future TLS

1p (7.875" x 10.5”) TLS, War Department, Office of the Chief of Staff, Washington D.C. Dated January 10, 1931. The letter is written to the Lieutenant Colonel Francis W. Clark of the Fifth Corps Area Headquarters. Boldly signed, as "Douglas MacArthur". Flattened folds from mailing.

MacArthur comments that Clark is "Due for promotion in about five months" but that "There will be no vacancy for a colonel at Fort Lewis until 1932." He later states "The Adjutant General further states that upon your promotion you will be No. 1 on the foreign service roster. For these reasons I do not believe it would be advisable for you to make the move."

Douglas MacArthur was an American military leader who served as General of the Army for the United States, as well as a Field Marshal to the Philippine Army. He was Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the 1930s, and he played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II.
