Robert E. Lee & JEB Stuart Cartes-de-Visite, Famed Confederate Generals

A pair of cartes-de-visite of famed Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and J.E.B. Stuart. Both measure 2.5" x 4", No place, undated. Both have bumped corners, with the Stuart CDV having rounded clipped corners with additional toning, soiling, and wear. Overall very good.

The first card is a vignette portrait of Robert E. Lee dressed in his Confederate general's uniform. Captioned at the lower margin "Robert E. Lee" along with a handwritten note in pencil in an unknown hand that reads, "Reb Genl Lee." No backstamp on verso. The second card is a vignette portrait of J.E.B. Stuart dressed in his Confederate uniform. With a Fisher & Denison, Publishers and Stationers, Baltimore backstamp on verso. With another pencil notation on verso that reads, "Conf Gen Jeb Stuart."

With Lee in command of the Army of Virginia, he strongly relied upon Stuart to act as his eyes and ears in the surrounding area. Lee would describe Stuart as being his only cavalry commander who "never brought me false information." For his part, Stuart relished the opportunity to torment the enemy while also working to screen the movements of his own forces from enemy scouts. His one failure in arriving late to the Battle of Gettysburg, however, may have cost the Confederate Army the war. The absence of the cavalry during the first two days of the battle made it impossible for Lee to obtain accurate information about his enemy, and therefore led to poor strategic decisions on the part of Confederate leaders.
