Description
Abraham Lincoln French Jacquard Silk Mourning Ribbon
A 19th-century French mourning ribbon depicting 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), the image printed on lovely olive green jacquard silk, ca. 1865-1876. Lincoln's portrait appears above an American eagle clutching garlands of olive and laurel, and the text "Abraham Lincoln" along with "Carquillat tex" and "Allardet del.," referring to the original French artists Carquillat and Allardet. Expected wear including minor water stains and isolated fabric loss mostly at the corners, else near fine. Framed behind glass in a period ebonized and gilt frame. The frame shows expected scuffs. Not examined out of the frame. The sight size is 6.5" x 8.875" while the actual framed size is 9.5" x 11.75" x 1.5."
Abraham Lincoln served as president between 1861 and his assassination in April 1865. Naturally, many souvenirs commemorating the slain president were produced around 1865, but the Centennial Exposition of 1876 also prompted artisans to return to popular patriotic subjects like Lincoln.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
