Description
2nd-3rd century AD. A limestone head from a statuette, depicting an Eastern character or divinity, wearing a high felt cap (pilos), the long hair arranged in thick curls descending neatly in fifteen vertical rows along the neck, thin and well-defined face; mounted on a custom-made display stand. Cf. The Walters Art Museum, inv. 54.1330, for similar in bronze. 106 grams, 68mm high (143 grams total, 10.3cm including stand) (2 1/2 (4)"). North London gentleman, in storage since the 1970s. Property of a West London gentleman. Female and male figures wearing similar conical headgear appeared as personifications of Asia and Armenia on monuments in Rome, suggesting that the youth here could represent the genius, or spirit, of one of these eastern provinces.
