Description
1st-2nd century AD. A fragment of a bronze vessel with high-relief figural scene of a putto grappling with a cockerel; silver insert to the putto's eyes. See Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, items from 289 to 297, for comparable appliques. 6.2 grams, 19mm (3/4"). Found by the vendor's grandfather in West Sussex in the early 1990s. Property of a West Sussex, UK, gentleman. During the Imperial Age, funeral urn handles were attached to the main body of the urn by means of appliqu�s. This handle terminal often took triangular form and was adorned with mythological scenes.
