Description
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A skillfully carved limestone head of a god with a beard - either Jupiter (Zeus) or Neptune (Poseidon). The god has a huge head of hair and a fulsome beard - in fact, with small eyes, a flattened nose, and a mere line for a mouth, the god's hirsute nature is the dominant theme of the piece. The beard was associated with these gods to emphasize their mature age (rather than, for example, Apollo, who is always depicted as a beardless youth). When first made, this head was most likely painted bright colors, but those have worn away to expose the bright white limestone shown here. Comes with custom stand. Size: 4" W x 4.75" H (10.2 cm x 12.1 cm); height on stand: 5.75" (14.6 cm).
