A rare four-page Confederate letter written on July 26th, 1861 by Alex Ray of the 1st North Carolina Infantry from the defenses of Yorktown. In it, Ray reports the town to be tolerably right fortified" and boats further that "our military men say that ten thousand good troops can hold the place against thirty to fifty thousand," adding further "I have no desire to try it but if they come we will make a desperate fight before we leave here."
