North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. late 19th century CE. A fantastic bowl made from a hollowed coconut shell. The walls curve upward with polished, honey hued exterior surfaces. The rim is carved with a rounded and scalloped shape. The exterior has been varnished while the interior basin has been left in a natural state. Bowls and cups like this example were typically used in royal dinners, celebrations, or other events of regal importance. Due to the thinness and the fragile nature of coconut shell, few have survived in such fine condition, making this piece quite special! Size: 4.675" W x 3.5" H (11.9 cm x 8.9 cm)
