Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1000 CE. This Is a fine hand-built blackware stirrup vessel featuring the legendary head of Naylamp, flanked by two zoomorphic heads. The globular body rests on a flared foot and a strap handle rises from the shoulder and connects to the spout. A molded spiky spondylus shell is positioned on top - perhaps to serve as a lug for a lid or stopper. The figural head which doubles as the neck of the spout represents Naylamp (also Naymlap, Nanlap, or Nylamp), the legendary founder of the Lambayeque dynasty who came from the south by sea and colonized the region before he allegedly sprouted wings and flew off into the sunset in a dramatic display of his magical powers. A pair of highly stylized jaguar heads project from his shoulders to symbolize this mythical strength, and the sacred spondylus shell marks his connection with the ocean. Size: 6" Diameter x 6.5" H (15.2 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private S.H. collection, Santa Clara, California, USA acquired prior to 1970
