Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. A wonderfully detailed blackware jar with strap handle and figural spout depicting Naylamp, the chief deity of the Sican/Lambayeque culture. Twin flares rise from eithre side of the rounded body, each in the form of a stepped pyramid. A bird is perched on the back of the strap handle. Incised lines and drilled holes provide a tremendous amount of close detail. Size: 6.4" W x 7.2" H (16.3 cm x 18.3 cm)

Elites in this culture were buried with metal spouted vessels; the blackware may have been so colored to imitate the shine of copper. However, the elaborate iconography of this ceramic vessel suggests that it belonged to (and was buried with) someone with some wealth.
