Description
Native American, Western United States, Plains Tribes, likely Sioux, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A matched pair of buckskin leather leggings or chaps made by a Plains tribe, and quilled with red, white, orange, and blue bands and hoof print symbols. Each is made from a large square of tanned leather that is folded and sewn along the fringed edge. The quill work across the front is made with porcupine or bird feather quills, in 4 bands wrapping around the lower ankle and calf area. The red U or horseshoe patterns are indicative of raids and horse ownership - the meaning varies from tribe to tribe, but often the number of symbols corresponded with horses taken or owned by the wearer. Size: 30.5" L x 14" W (77.5 cm x 35.6 cm)
