Item Details
Description
Ancient Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ban Chiang, ca. 300 BCE. A lovely example of a hand-built pottery jar exhibiting an apple-shaped body, a gently corseted shoulder, and a large, flared neck, all atop a flared pedestal foot. The vessel is first covered in a layer of cream slip and let to dry before applying the russet-hued pigment to form broad, spiraling tendrils that nearly intersect with each other but do not touch. The corseted area between the shoulder and rim is lined with a solid red stripe, and the rim exterior is further embellished with a register of petite spots. An attractive vessel from the ancient Ban Chiang! Size: 8.2" Diameter x 8.5" H (20.8 cm x 21.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
