Description
Waters made about 20,000 of these .54 caliber pistols from 1837 to 1843. This one has a crisp lock stamp: [eagle head] / A. WATERS / MILBURY. MS/ 1838, along with an S stamp forward. The metal is smooth and in the bright. The wood has a tight fit to the metal and warm brown tone and edges showing only slight rounding. The right side shows an H carved at the wrist and the left flat has a W. Many were converted to percussion in the 1850s and some saw service in southern mounted units in the Civil War. This one was converted to percussion by the cone-in-barrel method used at U.S. arsenals and uses a military style hammer. This is a nice looking US martial single shot pistol and has a good pre-Mexican War date.
