Early appearance of Wyoming on a map -- so early, it’s not been added to the map title. Features rich, original hand coloring. Johnson’s Nebraska, Dakota, Idaho and Montana by A. J. Johnson. This is the second state of the map, moving parts of Madison County and Beaver Head from Wyoming to Montana. Pre-dates Yellowstone. Yellowstone Lake is shown as Subletts Lake and is pushed far to the west of its actual location. The region between the Yellowstone River and the North Platte is largely uncharted. Dakota and Wyoming still have no counties. There are only five counties in Idaho and only nine in Montana. Shows early explorers’ routes, forts, roads, towns, villages, Indians, as well as Gold Mines in Western Montana. Also shows a number of proposed railroad routes and trading posts. Several other Gold regions, including one in Idaho are noted. Map dated 1865 and published in Johnson’s New Illustrated Family Atlas of 1867. A lovely example, with only a small split at bottom centerfold and one tiny edge tear. Both have been repaired archivally with the Japanese kozo technique that uses fine mulberry paper, is reversible and lasts a thousand years. 17 x 23.5
