Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Mixtec people, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. An interesting pendant depicting a penate head of a family ancestor, hand-carved from mottled greenstone with beige veining throughout. The trapezoidal head features finely preserved, string-cut details such as circular eyes with slits formed between the lids, a protruding triangular nose, a broad mouth with pursed lips, and an ornate headdress that rests low on the brow. A suspension hole is biconically drilled through the temples, thus allowing this carving to be worn as an accessory on a necklace strand. Size: 0.75" W x 1.18" H (1.9 cm x 3 cm)
Provenance: private Eagle, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1990s
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
