Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec culture, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A fine collection of 15 copper and silver alloy adornments of rings and bells from ancient Mesoamerica! The six rings are all similar; comprised of copper and silver with flat bands and wire faces. The face is the visage of the Rain God Tlaloc, with circular eyes, spiral designs on cheeks, spikey headdress, prominent nose, and elaborate earspools. The band of the ring features a spiral motif framed by a wave pattern. These are exquisite and rare examples of jewelry! The 9 petite bells are copper with spherical bodies and integral ring loops; probably for use during ceremonial dance and attached to clothing or other jewelry. A few retain their clapper ball and emit a faint tinkle. Size of rings: 0.8" L x 0.75" Diameter (2 cm x 1.9 cm); quality of silver 22% to 31%; largest bell: 0.75" L x 0.52" W (1.9 cm x 1.3 cm)

The Mixtec artisans were masters of metallurgy, surpassing other Mesoamerican cultures in craftsmanship. Metallurgy was introduced into the region around 900 CE. Mesoamericans used metals for ornamentation, though their tools and weaponry remained Neolithic. Many experts agree that Mixtec metal wares set the standard for Mesoamerican cultures. The Oaxaca master silversmiths also used copper and gold to make pendants, masks, beads, buckles, rings, and bells such as these employing hammering and lost wax process techniques.
