Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rican Highlands, Guapiles, Huetar culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery jar resting upon a trio of drooping semicircular legs. The round-bottomed vessel has a tall shoulder adorned with six charming monkeys of a characteristically abstract presentation with bulbous heads and sinuous tails. Areas of the bowl are decorated with earthy vermilion slip atop the buffware surface and imbue the vessel with fine coloration evocative of ancient Costa Rica! Size: 5.7" W x 3.8" H (14.5 cm x 9.7 cm).

Condition
Restoration to one leg with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to legs, body, and monkeys, with fading to original pigmentation, and softening to some finer details. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
