Description

William "Buffalo Bill" Cody Two Printed Programs

Two programs for Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. Both measure 7.25" x 9.5". Wraps are creased, with chipping on edges and nearly detached from the stapled binding, interior is lightly toned at edges with only minor soiling. The colors remain bright. Overall very good.

The first is titled "Buffalo Bill's Wild West: Historical Sketches and Daily Review." Cincinnati, OH: Strobridge Lithography Company, 1907. Colorful wraps depict Cody astride a horse in full regalia. Inside are short articles on the history and characters of America's westward expansion, along with many advertisements throughout. 8th Edition, listing a one-week touring date - June 17th to 22nd, 1907.

The second program is titled "Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World." New York: Fless & Ridge Printing Co., 1899. 64pp plus advertisements.

William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody opened his Wild West show in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19, 1883. Cody drew upon his real-life adventures, turning them into heightened spectacles for the public. The open-air shows depicted cowboys, Native Americans, army scouts, outlaws, and wild beasts, with most sketches being sensationalized. Native Americans were portrayed in a particular exploitative manner, while the rival cowboys and their lives on the American frontier were romanticized. In 1893, Cody changed the show's name to "Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World" and the show performed at the Chicago World's Fair to a crowd of 18,000. This performance lent a huge deal to the show's popularity, and the show never again did as well as it did that year.
