"Buffalo Bill" Cody served as a Union soldier in the Civil War, Pony Express rider, scout, Indian fighter, and professional hunter. Cody allegedly earned his moniker "Buffalo Bill" by the ease with which he slayed thousands of the beasts of the Plains. Cody became a successful showman with his incredibly popular "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" show, a colorful and rollicksome traveling circus featuring Cowboys, Indians, Bandits, and other motley characters. Performers like Sitting Bull and Calamity Jane reenacted famous events, staged stunts and tricks, raced on horseback, and circled their Conestoga wagons to the dazzled delight of American and European crowds.

George Stacy (1831-1897) was a photographer who flourished during the 1850s and 1860s. A Civil War field photographer, Stacy also photographed individual, family, and celebrity portraits; natural wonders; current events, state visits, and marine happenings; and urban architecture. His primary photography studio was located at 691 Broadway in New York City.
