Another Elmira stock certificate was offered for sale by Holabird Auctions a five years before this was purchased. Fred Holabird projected that this mine is probably in Reese River or Humboldt since those were the latest rushes at that time. Other possibilities include the Comstock and Aurora. I was able to determine that the mine was in Humboldt County. Incorporated in New York (probably in 1866), issued in Elmira, New York April 18, 1866 to Thos. H. McGrath for1 5 shares, and signed by Robert Covell as president and R. H. Lawrence as secretary. 25 cent United States insurance adhesive revenue at left. Printed by Francis & Loutrell, New York. Uncancelled. The vignette is interesting because it is not a true mining vignette, but rather a vignette of three men working an outcrop outside (not a prospect) for a road or canal. Note the flat surface they created. Also dog on lower left guarding a safe and allegorical woman and shield on upper left . There is an embossed seal on the lower left. Stains and tears on edges. Top right corner is dog eared and stained. Still an attractive and scarce early Nevada stock. Originally thought to be 1864 and territorial, but my research proves otherwise. 1867 Mining Journal reports on this claim in Humboldt County.
